Stone is virtually the sturdiest and most durable material to use for anything. Therefore, using stone on a patio is the smart thing to do if you want a long lasting, durable patio. If you have a stone patio already and you want to make it last, then follow these tips on maintaining the material and helping it to last for the longest amount of time possible.

Get Waterproof Material

Water can wear down stone over time, so make sure to engrave some sort of waterproof material into the stone. Even if you don’t have waterproof material on the stone, your patio will still last for a very long time. Ask your patio installer or provider about whether or not you should use a waterproof material on your stone patio. You can also ask your provider if they have fake stone that acts like stone but is actually a water proof model of real stone. Marble could also double as stone, but it is ten times more expensive than regular stone.

Keep it Away From Pools

Having a patio with stone material by a pool probably is not a very good idea. Not only will the acidic nature of the chlorine eat away at the stone, but stone is also very dangerous to have by water. Stone is slippery and could cause some serious injuries for those that use the pool, especially if they are little children. If you are going to have your patio by the pool regardless, then make sure to wear shoes at all times whenever you aren’t in the water. Just know that you can’t sue the patio company for installing the patio in the area that you wanted to install it unless they warned you ahead of time about the dangers of having stone near a pool.

Clean it Often and Take Care of Damages Quickly

Stone, especially wet stone, is a breeding ground for mold and other annoying plants. Make sure to clean up any spills as soon as they happen. On top of this, if there are any breaks or cracks in the stone, get them patched and fixes as soon as possible. Cracks are where mold likes to grow the most. You don’t want to have to deal with a moldy patio or have to pay to get it removed and refilled.

Stone patios have a long life because they are incredibly durable. They are not very safe to have around pools, but they make great recreational patios to connect to the side of your house. Clean the stone often and take care of any repairs as soon as they are necessary. You don’t want to have to deal with the consequences of a damaged stone patio. If you don’t want to use regular stone, then there are other types of stone that are waterproof but more expensive than regular stone, such as marble. Whatever the case may be, make sure to use these tips to give your stone patio the longest life it can possible have.
